To see if it's the antivirus or firewall, try turning it off to test.

- That worked! It let me onto the main Origin page and I was able to open the window to enter the game code. BUT, it then said that it was temporarily unavailable because of maintainance or because the server was over loaded or something, so I couldn't finish installing. Then Origin quit responding. Does this happen often?

Maybe restarting your computer will put thing right.
And if that doesn't work try cleaning the Origin Cache: http://sims4.crinrict.com/en/2014/09/delete-origin-cache-files/Good to hear.
Make sure to accept a solution once your issue is solved so the next user knows what the solution was and the helpers know you no longer need help.
