Re: San Myshuno crashes game

I’m experiencing an issue where the entire Uptown district in San Myshuno crashes my game whenever I try to enter any of the lots. At first, I thought it might be a corrupted save, so I removed all mods and CC, cleared the cache, and repaired the game. When that didn’t solve it, I uninstalled the game completely, deleted The Sims 4 folder in my Documents (after backing up my Tray, Saves, and Mods), reinstalled the game, and tested everything on a new save file without importing anything. That process actually fixed the issue a few months ago, and I was able to access the broken lots again but now, after repeating the exact same steps, the issue has returned and won’t go away. Even in a fresh save with no content added and no mods enabled, Uptown immediately causes my game to crash or get stuck in an infinite loading screen. I also tried bulldozing and evicting the lots before entering them, but nothing helps. This is not limited to one save file. I’ve tested across multiple new saves, clean installs, and completely mod free setups and nothing.

IshJenJen  Please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

Please also list the expansions (EPs only) you have installed, or if it's easier, the ones you don't have.

Crashing or other performance issues in this area is uncommon but not unheard of, and I don't know of a pattern as to who's affected, so any extra details you might have would also be appreciated.

puzzlezaddict Hi thank you for the reply! I own all of the expansion packs except the most recent one, Enchanted By Nature. As requested, I’ve attached my DxDiag file to this post. Not sure what else to add, but I did try to run my game on DX11, and those builds did open, but my game started to struggle as I was no longer able to open other builds and got stuck in an infinite loading screen. So now I'm back on DX9.

IshJenJen  When you tested DX11 mode, was that with or without your Mods folder?  I ask because the game should default to DX11 on your hardware, and the only common reason it doesn't work on systems like yours is when there's older custom content present that was never updated for DX11 mode.

Separately, your dxdiag lists a number of crashes of the graphics driver, so please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver, as described here:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

Rather than reinstalling the newest driver, use a slightly older one, which you can get here:

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/

Choose Game Ready Driver as the download type to be able to go back further; studio drivers are for professional workloads.  Start with the driver from mid-March, which should be fine; you can update incrementally from there if necessary, without needing to use DDU again.  But trying a newer driver followed by an older one would require using DDU to remove the newer driver first.

puzzlezaddict Hi, thank you so much for your help! I did a clean uninstall and reinstalled my graphics driver using the March version as suggested, but unfortunately that alone didn’t solve the issue. I then reinstalled and repaired the game, and this time it worked and I believe I found the root of the problem: GShade. I hadn’t relinked GShade after reinstalling, and once I did, the issue returned. It looks like the latest version of GShade is no longer compatible with DX9, which is likely what was causing the broken lots. After switching to an older version of GShade, the game worked again. And to answer the earlier question, yes, when I tested DX11 previously, I still had my mods folder in so that likely contributed to the infinite loading screen.

IshJenJen OMG this was my issue too! I haven't used GShade for long - so it didn't filter in my brain as a mod -- especially since it's its own thing. I've just removed it for now because I am traumatized. I'm so glad you posted too!! Have a super rest of the weekend!
