sims 4 installed twice

there are two full sims games downloaded on my computer.  I noticed this when an extra shortcut kept popping up on my desktop, always coming back no matter how many times i tried deleting it.  I think this happened around the same time i tried downloading a new expansion pack through origin instead of steam.  All of the games reinstalled through origin and i couldnt stop them haha.  I used to use origin to launch the sims 4 but recently switched to steam for convenience when the game was on sale.  I want to uninstall one of them because my computer is hanging onto a thread with the amount of space this has left but I dont know which is which.  they both look the same in the "apps & features" storage in my pc's settings.

How do I know which one to uninstall and can I safely do so without losing years worth of gameplay?

details: im using windows 10, I have all but 2 expansion packs, every game pack and a couple stuff packs.  I use cc but not much.  This started many months after starting to use steam.  I only launch the game through steam now.

  • @Erythina  By default, these would be the two locations for the game's installed files:

    Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Sims 4

    Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 4

So you'd want to remove the second and leave the first, that is if you're doing it manually.  But that might not be the easiest way.  Can you simply tell Origin to uninstall Sims 4?  You should have two game tiles in your library, one with the Steam logo and one without.  If you right-click on the one that does NOT have the Steam logo and select Uninstall, Origin should remove the second install without touching the one within Steam.

As far as your saves and other user data are concerned, everything is stored in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4.  It's a good idea to back this up before doing anything else, and to back it up periodically anyway, just in case.  An external drive would be best, but you could also use a free filehosting service (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) if you want.
