Sims 4 Mods Not Showing Up

so i dont know if this is a user error, a mod issue, or a sims/ea issue, but none of my mods are working or showing up at all. i've been playing the sims since TS3 Island Living, so it isnt like i dont know how to install mods. I do have an external hard drive that i have all my sims info on, but i totally uninstalled/reinstalled the game when i got the external, as well as deleted any lingering files that might have confused the computer, so I don't think it's an issue with the folder path. i've had this hard drive for like 6 months and the mods only disappeared about one month ago. i only play with MCCC and UI cheats so i know the mods are installed correctly, in the right place, and don't have any corequisite mods. I have tried to do the "symbolic link" method, and it just tells me "local volumes are required to complete the operation". i deleted my cache files, but that didn't fix the mod issue and also made my save files disappear too for some reason. i have script mods turned on in game settings, but it's acting like i don't have any installed at all. no UI errors or last exception messages, it just runs as if i'm playing the game vanilla. literally none of my troubleshooting is working, and is even messing up my game more. does anyone have any ideas?

  • @simmingonsixam  Please find the full path to the folder Sims 4 is reading, as the game sees it.  Here's how:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2018/07/how-to-find-your-user-folder/

Compare it to the folder that contains your mods.  If they don't match, that's your issue.  And I understand that this setup worked before, and you probably know what you're doing, but it's possible that something changed on the Windows side, which the game then adjusted to, leaving your mods behind.

If you'd like help creating a symbolic link, please list the folder the game is currently reading and the path to the folder you'd like it to read instead.

  • thanks so much for the reply! when i go to game options > screen capture like it says in the link you posted, i find that (at least for my photos/videos), there is a new onedrive folder that the game is using as its path. the folder it is reading is "C:\Users\avama\OneDrive\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods".  the path it should be reading is "D:\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods"

@simmingonsixam  If there isn't a symbolic link in OneDrive's version of Documents, then Sims 4 won't know to look for your user data on D.  If you're fine with OneDrive in general and just want to create a working symlink, use this guide:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2020/02/moving-windows-documents-folder-to-external-drive-via-symbolic-link.html

    The command would be this:

    MKLINK /J “C:\Users\avama\OneDrive\Documents\Electronic Arts” “D:\Electronic Arts”

Or you could add The Sims 4 to the end of each path if you want to link the Sims 4 folder rather than the Electronic Arts folder.  Make sure there is no existing folder with the name of the symlink you want to create in the location you'll be creating it—rename the current folder if necessary.

If you'd like to get rid of OneDrive first, here's how:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/PC/CURRENT-ISSUE-Sims-4-saves-user-content-disappearing-PC/m-p/12475370#Remove

Then you'd adjust the first part of the command to reflect the folder Sims 4 started reading with OneDrive out of the picture.

  • i followed the instructions and copy/pasted the command you prepared for me, but it keeps telling me "local volumes are required to complete the operation".... any idea where i'm going wrong?

@simmingonsixam  Sorry for the late reply; I've been very busy lately and fell behind with AHQ replies.  Perhaps OneDrive is pushing all your data to the cloud.  I don't know for sure because I never use it other than to test, but if you'd like to get rid of OneDrive, that should fix the issue.  Just use the guide I linked, and then the command will need to list the current location of Documents.  You can confirm that location with the reg query command in the guide.

  • Hi! so sorry for the late reply. i've been busy with the holiday season as well!!! I got rid of OneDrive but when I type in the command it tells me the syntax is incorrect. what am i doing wrong?

@simmingonsixam  The first quotation mark is the wrong kind.  (If you look closely, you can see it's curved rather than straight like the others.)  Try copying it from the guide, just the quote mark.

  • i feel so bad. i'm still going wrong somewhere. I copy/pasted the quotation mark from the guide as well as typed the command by hand, but it said "cannot create a file when that file already exists," so i renamed my Electronic Arts folder (on my D:\ drive) to see if that would change anything, with that tweak it tells me "local volumes are required to complete this operation".......thank you so much for your help and patience

@simmingonsixam  Rather than renaming the folder on D, you needed to rename the folder on C where you're creating the symbolic link.  That's what the first error means: the system can't create a symlink with the same name in the same location as a folder that already exists.  So revert the folder on D to "Electronic Arts" , and make sure there is NOT already an Electronic Arts folder in Documents.
