Sims 4: Not Opening after Update

After about a three hour update for the Sims 4 and Origin, I was horrified to find that when I click "Play", a window opens that claims, "Unable to start: Cannot start because required game data is missing or damaged.  Please try reinstalling the game."

Does anybody know if there is a way to solve this?  My sister and I have worked hard on building a family that is fun to play, and it would be awful to lose them forever and also know that this game is no longer dependable.

    Hi @The-Sonnys

Are you using mods or custom content in your game? If so, move your Mods folder to the desktop and try to open the game again.

If withouth the mods folder the game starts, then you have at least one mod that it's incompatible with the new version of the game. You have to find which.

If you don't have too much content in your Mods folder, then you can try one by one. It's more likely the cause to be a mod than custom content.

If you have a lot of mods, I suggest you to try the 50/50 method.

Once you have found the problem, let's say it is a mod. You have to look in the creator's site if they have updated the mod. If there is a new version of the mod compatible with the newest version of the game (1.9.83 right now), it will work.

You should know that this week a new patch will be released, so you may want to wait.

Here is the process I ended up using:

    1. Created a backup file

    2. Repaired the game

    3. Renamed the backup file to make it the official file.

    4. The game complained that the file was saved in a newer version of Sims 4 and that I needed to update, but the game opened just fine.

Posting this for the benefit of others in the future.  I sincerely sympathize with anyone else who is having this issue.
