Sims 4 saves are not opening on new laptop

I looked up how to transfer my saved files onto the new laptop and the answers said to

1. download and start up the sims 4 on the new device to create a save file

2. transfer saves and tray files from old device to usb/ext. hard drive

3. transfer saves and tray files into the new save file created on new laptop

I tried this, and tried with both the legacy and regular versions of my files and the game.

On the usb (old laptop files), there are files called The Sims 4 Legacy Edition, The Sims 4 and The Sims 4 Temp 2. I was told they are all likely important. In the Sims 4 file, the saves are titled old saves, this is to differentiate them from the new saves and the legacy saves. I seem to have save files of both the legacy edition and the 64 bit version.

I tried moving the old files to the new save file on the new laptop, I tried starting over and creating a new file. Again I started over, and had moved the file from documents:EA to desktop after reading another post here. And fixed the names of the save files so it was just Slot_00000000x.save and it still isn't working.

When I open the sims gallery, my brand new save is there, with just the names of my old household names in slots, with no photo and a red X over the slot.

I have also ensured that my computer has me signed into an administrator account, and tried running both the 32 bit legacy edition and 64 bit with both save files.

Sorry if this is confusing, I just wanted to get in all the steps I had already taken.

  • @2sockbuddies  The Gallery issue is a known problem related to the game's permission to write to the Documents directory.  Since it can also affect your saves, it's worth taking care of that first.

Once the Gallery is working, please double-check the names of the save files.  They need to contain exactly eight hexidecimal digits, for example:

    Slot_00000002.save

    Slot_0000000c.save

    Slot_00000015.save

I mention this because your example has nine digits, which the game won't read properly.  Maybe that's a typo, but it's still worth counting the digits, since it's an easy fix.

Please also make sure the saves are in the folder Sims 4 is using.  You can check by creating a save, going back to the Main Menu, and hovering over the folder icon with the other save data: this will show the full file path of the save you just created.  Your other saves need to be there, not in any other location.

If you're not sure what you're looking at, take a few screenshots of the various save folders and attach them to a post.
