The Sims 4 screen flickering

The Sims 4 worked fine for few years until few months ago, the screen started to have so many horizonal lines flickering and glitching. It worked fine after I changed the graphics and vertical sync. Few days ago, I opened the game and it started to flicker again. After the new update was out, I updated and hoped it will work fine again, but it did not work and got way worse than it was. I have no idea what the problem is so, I attached the screenshot of how it looks like. I was wondering anyone could help me with this issue.

  • @dlgowjd05  Please force Windows to use the Nvidia graphics card for Sims 4.  Hit Windows key-i, select System > Display > Graphics settings, click Browse, select TS4_x64.exe, and choose the high-performance option.  Restart your computer and test.

If you still get flickering, repeat the process, except this time, choose the power-saving option, i.e. the integrated Intel graphics chip.  Let me know whether this makes any difference.

@dlgowjd05  I'm glad that helped, but that means the problem is with the Nvidia GPU.  Is this laptop under warranty?  If so, I would strongly suggest using that warranty, probably to get a different laptop.  This is supposed to be a gaming system, and it's not really if you can't use the dedicated graphics card for gaming.  If you do pursue this, state that you get flickering and graphics anomalies when gaming on the Nvidia GPU but not when you force the same game to use the Intel iGPU.  That should be sufficient.

  • The Sims 4 worked fine for few months after the time I had same issues with the game and someone thankfully helped me to solve that issues. The screen had been showing many horizonal lines flickering and glitching again. It worked fine until the new update from few days ago. I tried all the stuffs that was from last solution, but it had not been fixed yet. I am not sure what is the issue for this time. I am not sure dxdiag would help for this time to solve this issue, but I will attach it on the file.

@dlgowjd05  I will repeat my earlier question about this laptop being under warranty.  The previous fix only helped because you switched to using the integrated graphics chip rather than the dedicated card (the Nvidia RTX 3050 ti), which suggests that the problem might be the dedicated card.  A defective GPU can't really be fixed, at least not in a laptop.

Having said that, you can try the same method as before: choosing the power-saving option rather than the high-performance one.  The reason it stopped working is that Sims 4 now uses TS4_DX9_x64.exe, not TS4_x64.exe, so your previously-imposed setting is now having no effect.  This still does nothing about the underlying issue, of course, but it's your choice whether you want to pursue that.

I am sorry for the late response on that question. I did not noticed that there was a reply on the last post until later of the time. I thought it would’ve been too late to reply back. Sadly, my laptop warranty expired around July of last year. So, I wasn’t able to get a new laptop with my warranty of this laptop. I tried the method from last time, but it didn’t fixed yet.

@dlgowjd05  Did you specifically try the method from before but with TS4_DX9_x64 rather than TS4_x64?  The old setting wouldn't apply to the game now.

And I'm sorry to hear this laptop is out of warranty, and I'm not sure there's much you can do here aside from taking it into a repair shop to see whether the problem is fixable.  Often it's not, especially with laptops, but perhaps someone will be willing to do a free or low-cost diagnostic scan and let you know your options.

Thank you so much! Trying that method with TS4_DX9_x64 fixed the problem for now. I didn’t noticed that I had to try on the other one. Is that mean I can remove the TS4_x64 or do I still have to keep it? I got my laptop as used about a year ago and it had been working fine with the graphic card until the December of last year. It would’ve been great if that issue showed up before my warranty expire. Maybe I have to see whether I should take it to the repair shop to see what the problem is, but thank you again for helping me out to fix the problem for now.

@dlgowjd05  The TS4_x64.exe is now only used when the game is running on DirectX 11, rather than DirectX 9 is it used to do.  TS4_DX9_x64.exe corresponds to DirectX 9.  So if you're only going to play in DX9 mode, you can delete the setting for TS4_x64.exe, at least for now.  But Sims 4 will go DirectX 11-only at some point in the future, so you might as well keep both, especially if you think you might forget to reapply it.
