The Sims 4 won't launch

I just installed the EA app, The Sims 4, and its expansions on my Windows laptop and it won't launch. When I press play on the EA app, it acts as if it is launched and I can see on task manager that it is running in the background (screenshot attached), but the game won't open.

I have tried running repairs on the game twice, I've restarted the laptop, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game, but I'm still having the same issue. Any ideas?

  • @churchado  That means that the problem is something in your old user folder.  The first culprit is always mods or custom content, so test those files first, in the clean folder.  The 50/50 method can make the process much more efficient:

Once you've sorted through this content, you can transfer the contents of the saves and Tray (saved households and builds) folders to the new Sims 4 folder, plus Screenshots and Recorded Videos if you care about those.  The other files and folders can be discarded; the game will regenerate them as necessary.

  • @churchado  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a reply here.

@puzzlezaddict Sorry, I should've specified: I have the game installed on an external hard drive as the internal hard drive doesn't have sufficient space. For that reason, I can't move it onto my desktop.

Hi, i also want to jump to the bandwagon because my sims 4 couldn't launch since it switch to EA app. I hope you could help me foresee the problem here on why it won't launch. I tried to move The Sims 4 folder to the desktop ,turn on the windows defender and fire wall too, reinstall both apps and cleaning the cache and it still say the same. Here's my dxdiag, thank you in advance!

@churchado  Rename the folder instead, which accomplishes the same thing.  But please make sure you're renaming the user folder, that has subfolders like saves and Tray, as opposed to the game's program files, which contains subfolders like Delta and Game.

@kesyafa  Does the EA App open and load properly?  If not, that's the issue, not Sims 4.  If the App is working, can you launch the game from within your library, and does that help?

I don't see any Sims 4-related errors in your dxdiag, which could mean they've been crowded out by newer errors.  It could also mean that the game is being blocked from starting rather than crashing.  That's often antivirus-related, so please check yours for any actions that involve Sims 4.  If you see a quarantined file, restore it.  Otherwise, repair the game and try again to play.

@puzzlezaddictI can't find the user folder you're referring to. I've searched my D: drive (where the game is installed) for saves and tray folders, but haven't found anything relevant.
