Why my Sims 4 is so slow while the computer is not at full load?

I have a big family (8 Sims) in a large home with thousands of objects. Now, my game is extremely laggy and slow. I need to wait half a minute to switch Sims and about 10 seconds to select an object to pop out an option bubble.

In order to figure out the bottleneck, I kept monitoring my computer when playing the game. But I was surprised that my computer was not under max load at all when gaming:

RAM capacity: 32GB, but only around 15GB used

CPU: 8 cores. I understand only 2 cores were used by the Sims 4, but even the 2 cores were not at full load, running at around 70%

VRAM capacity: dedicated 8GB, but only around 6.5GB used; Shared video RAM: sometimes 1 GB, sometimes 0.1GB

GPU: running at around 67%

Temperature: CPU was around 65 Celsius degree, GPU was around 56 Celsius degree

The drivers are all up-to-date

The game was running under 4K with DirectX 11.

I don't use any CC, and I installed all DLCs.

The game version: 1.107.151.1020 DX11

The game ran smoothly when I switched to another family without thousands of objects. But I have played the big family for years, and I don't want to start over with a new family. Can someone please give me hints on the potential bottleneck for the game? Explain why my Sims 4 is running so slow while the computer is not at full load?

  • @jliu670  The bottleneck is the game engine: you're giving it more to do than it can handle properly.  There's no fix for this other than to reduce the load.  One thing you can try is playing at a lower resolution, although I'm not sure how much that will help.  If it did, the conclusion might be that you'd need to play this household at something closer to 1080p rather than 4k.

You can also try Simp4Sims's Graphics Rules Overhaul, that is if it's been updated for the DX11 patch.  Make sure you're downloading one that was posted after that patch release; the older version caused the game to stop working entirely.  The idea of this file is that among other things, it lowers the number of times the game switches between the high and low LOD versions of objects, and that switching itself can be a significant source of lag.

Having said that, it's reasonably well-established at this point that Sims 4 can't handle large lots with thousands of objects.  It's clearly a game issue, not a system issue, and until and unless the developers fix it, there's not much you can do on your end.
