Xbox controller not working

I've always played The Sims on PlayStation. I thought I'd move to PC (laptop). I bought the game yesterday but I just cannot get on with using the keyboard as I've only played it with a controller before. I've tried to use my Xbox controller but it just will not work. What can I do?

  • @e962558f14c969aa  Sims 4 doesn't support controller use on PC.  But you do have a couple of options here.  One is to install the game through Steam, which has a controller support feature that will probably work in Sims 4.  I say "probably" because I haven't tested it and don't remember hearing from anyone who has, but it does work with most other games.  Any content you've purchased through the EA App will also work with a Steam install; let me know if you need help getting your everything installed correctly.

The other option is to use a third-party app to map the keyboard keys to your controller.  I don't have any specific recommendations here either, but I do know that at least one is free and open-source, so it should be trustworthy and reliable as these things go.  You'll still need to look up the keys for the relevant commands and map them manually, but once you've done so, you can use the controller as normal.

I do want to suggest spending at least a little more time trying to get used to the keyboard though.  Players who've spent time with both versions of Sims 4 tend to say that the keyboard is much easier to use overall, to the point that a couple of them have switched to PC due to the ongoing issues with console controls.  You may find that this isn't the case for you, but it's also possible that you'll get the hang of it soon.
