Just found out TS5 will apparently be free to play upon release. Any hope or excitement I had for this game is now crushed and gone. Free to play at start is never good. There will be microtransactions galore.
How did I miss this?
So...I'm not as concerned as the people on Twitter right now. I'm not at ALL surprised given
1) the Sims 4 free to play launch
2) general trends in the gaming industry
3) standards set by popular franchises (fortnite, minecraft)
What really is going to make the different is if they continue to make high-quality gameplay content in expansion packs or if they are mostly going to microtransact with individual buy mode items. - logionXSeasoned HotshotOffering the game as free to play at release is a surprising move, they are most likely not going to have any expansion packs ready at release so they would need to have some sort of monetization model.
But I would still imagine that EA/Maxis will design the game so it's still appealing to people that are familiar with the sims, they are not going to have a game that they don't expect that people would not want to play and buy content for.
So Rene will probably have features that appeals to people, maybe features that they were not able to make in the sims4. In fact, if they are going for a free-to play model then they have to focus even more on that part because the success of the game is even more dependent on getting people to play it. - RoaringHeightsSeasoned Newcomerhttps://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/comment/18283101#Comment_18283101

The drawback of showing us stuff so early in the development process is that so many things are not in the final form yet, but people assume it's how they will look... but it is legitimately hard to know what will and what will not resemble the eventual game.
It's true a lot of what they showed is early development no one thinks Sims are going to be walking around town looking like Larry the Cucumber, but some things do look more finished and polished specially build mode. For me the hair they showed being recolored is worrisome after seeing what they did to Sims 4 hair. Seriously did anyone at all think the hair they put out in the Sims 4 base game and first few years of packs looked like a finished polished product are we blindly expecting they will do better now?
I get some are wait and see but if it's a product I want to buy I'm more say it now even if nothing changes at least I tried the community had to complain before we seen improvement in Sims 4 hair I'm just getting an early start as I don't want hair that looks like strands of lasagna. - crocobauraSeasoned AceI won't mind if they offer basegame free, it's going to be difficult anyway to go from a fully fledged game to just basegame yet again and I always wait for a couple of EPs or so before I move fully to the new game. I will see what they offer in terms of EPs, that is if there will be EPs, they may just do like for Freeplay and do free updates and sell small furniture and clothing sets.
- MissIcewolfSeasoned TravelerThe more I hear about The Sims 5, the more I think I'm gonna skip it. Being both mobile and PC was already a red flag for me, but going free to play is a even bigger red flag.

Obviously making the game free would make it easier to test out, even for those who already bought LBY or Paralives if it releases on time. The thing that has most of us worried about it is: How then are they going to make their money. We all know EA is greedy for money. Yes, eventually they can make money by releasing expansion packs, but are they going to stage it so they have an expansion pack ready to buy on its release? How stripped down will the Base game be? and what else will they be charging us for? "Free to Enter" sounds suspicious. Will they have an in-game store that you can't turn off which shows paid content you can buy for your furniture or sims clothing? In Sims 3 I hated the Sims store and turned it off in my game's options, but will an even more money hungry EA allow that again?
I would also be worried if you had to put a credit card into the game just to play, even with it "Free," because then it would only take a single miss-click and you'd be charged for those fancy items in the store window.
I played with Sims 2&3 for years hoping to teach EA a lesson. That selling a stripped down version of the game is not an "upgrade" and not worth my money. And it was apparently for naught, because they continue to do the same things and have plenty of simmers ready to throw them their money for the packs and kits. Have they learned anything from the Sims 4 years, probably. They learned that all they need is an addicted little fan-base and they can sell them anything.
I'm sorry for being so negative. It's just how I've been feeling. Good news is, EA will soon have competition. Fueled probably by some of my own money, if they get good reviews when they release. EA might not make as much money from their latest scheme. - AnonymousFYI - job listing has been removed for some reason

Sadly, that's true and the animations really 100% gave it away for me. They felt so cartoony and and reminded me of TS4's spaghetti animations which some of them are not very realistic. I just wish their main target group would be a more mature audience, the gameplay and humor would be so funny.
