How do you guys feel about Holidays in the Sims?

(Quick Story Skip For Actual Discussion)
So I was just sitting around at my desk when the thought about celebrating Christmas in the Sims filled me with excitement. I love Christmas because as a kid even when I didn't get much, it felt like literal magic. When I grew up, like almost every adult, I found the magic was gone but recently I realized the magic is still there but I'm just not exposed to it. As a kid you're exposed to so much Christmas related stuff that it's all you ever think about and it gets you excited. The Winter events at school like dances, pre-winter break class parties on the last day, watching the snow fall outside your classroom window. The T.V commercials you see filled with toys, games, and kids being happy. Your favorite T.V shows having their Christmas episodes and seeing reruns of your favorite holiday specials. At the end of the day it's all there just to get you to buy more stuff and what not, but as a kid it just felt like there was this magic in the air.

Now, one of the things I loved to see while watching let's plays is people celebrating Christmas and seeing all the decorations and the story telling surrounding the holidays. It's why I was excited for seasons back when it was coming out, to finally have more family play involving the holidays. Obviously, I'm mostly talking about Christmas, but I do enjoy the aspect of being able to celebrate holidays in general within the games. I feel like the Holiday System was done amazingly, albeit it can feel a bit empty at times. I don't play the Sims that much anymore, but when I used to play I would try and only do holidays around the irl holiday as a way to get into the spirit. Eventually I stopped all together because it was a lot of work. I also noticed that people who play generational based typically don't celebrate their sims holidays every single time because it can feel repetitive which I can understand. I definitely feel like if it was generational for me I wouldn't do it too much because I go all in for holidays like Christmas. I make "Winter Break" Holidays so that the children/teens can be off for the week. I even do Christmas Eve to give the feeling of anticipation. I also make sure to have family dinners that involve close family friends.

So how do you guys feel about holidays in the Sims? Is it something you actively participate in or only sometimes when it fits the story you're telling? Also, for those who play other Sims games, which game do you feel has the best "holiday" gameplay? I know The Sims 4 allows you to have your own traditions and literally shape them how you see fit, but I also know that Sims 3 had festivals that you could participate in with the whole town.

  • I so love seasonal holidays. My favorites are Canadian Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, New Years, My Birthday, Valentines Day,
    my Mom's Birthday, Easter, my Daughter's Birthday, Canadian Mother's Day & Canada Day! <3 B) :p ;)
  • In the past, I have pretty much ignored the Holidays feature, except for Winterfest and Harvestfest. IRL I love holidays, especially Christmas. I recently started a new save for the SimLit story I'm writing, and I filled the calendar with all sorts of holidays. I even downloaded some holiday tradition mods to add even more activities for my sims to do.

My Holiday list so far is:
    Spoiler

    1. HarvestFest
    2. Shopping Day
    3. Decorate for Winterfest (on the first day of Winter. IRL, I put up my Christmas Tree between October & November)
    4. Winterfest Eve
    5. Winterfest
    6. Memory Day (Remembrance, Visit Family, be thankful, and tell stories)
    7. New year's Eve
    8. First Day of the year (Gnomes appear to welcome the new year, since I didn't feel they fit in on Harvestfest)
    9. Family Day (Sort of a Mother's Day/Father's Day/Grandparent's Day combo.)
    10. Nature Day (like earth day)
    11. Flower Day (Love Day, but with the flower bunny. The flowers that the bunny brings are given to the recipient's date.)
    12. A 5 day long set of summer holidays called Summerfest, where sims enjoy music, water activities, hang out by the fire, have fireworks, etc. On the last day, everyone wears costumes lol. It's supposed to get progressively "crazier" as the days go on. It's a time to have fun, and enjoy the days off from work/school)
    13. Plumbob Wellness Day (A day of relaxation, it immediately follows Summerfest, and includes spa and wellness activities. Because it's good for sims to keep that plumbob green!)
    14. Grilled Cheese Day (Because, of course sims would celebrate this!)
There are more, but these are the main holidays I plan to celebrate with my sims. (Haven't played through a full year in this save yet. I use 28-day seasons.)

In addition to the holidays, I plan to celebrate by having "festivals". (Basically, bringing all of the sims to a "festival" lot, as I did with Harvestfest.)

I prefer Sims 3 holidays, since the festival lots are open all season, but I do like the Sims 4 calendar system with the ability to add holidays (one of the only things I actually like more in Sims 4, though the actual holidays are a little meh).

I put up the decorations of my own background's holidays in my sims houses and Snowflake day is officially for ice skating in my game. I like Love Day and I do wish there was New Years in Sims 3. Spooky day stuff as an additional DLC was an abomination.
  • Much of the time, they're a chore I do so my sims won't have negative buffs. I strip them down to make it easier, though: Love Day is just any romance behavior, Thanksgiving is just being thankful (though in some saves it's called The Big Game and involves watching sports and eating), etc. I do occasionally get into it, usually when my playing a Sim's holiday coincides with the holiday season. Lately I'm playing with integrating Stardew Valley events and TS4, so in some saves Winterfest or whatever is Feast of the Winter Star, and I play the appropriate music during the celebration!
