Sims 2 crashing when loading neighborhood

I know The Sims 2 worked a year ago, but now it keeps crashing. First it was crashing on startup, but a 4gb patcher fixed that. Now it crashes when loading neighborhoods. I've tried all kinds of fixes: I've run it in every kind of compatibility mode, as administrator, in a window, I've tried using the Graphics Rules Maker, and a number of other fixes I've found from Googling, but nothing has had any affect at all. I've included a dxdiag log and a Sims 2 config log, if those help.

  • I found the fix! (For any future readers)

The problem was that I had installed Sims 2 on a drive other than my C drive, and for some reason, it didn't like that.

I reinstalled everything (including the 4GB patch and DXVK fixes) on the C drive, and I no longer get the crash when loading a neighborhood.

I'm running Windows 10 right now, and have the Sims 2 Complete Collection from Origin.

  • @NightStryke12  I'm not the TS2 expert, but I can suggest a couple of things that might help.

Try dragging your TS2 game folder out of Documents and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game again, a clean folder will spawn with no content, and no corrupt files.

Also, it looks like you're using a 4k TV as a monitor?  Test on a different monitor, if you have one.  Older games often don't work well with HDMI cables, or TVs in general.

P.S.  From what I've read, the best compatibility mode to use is generally Vista Service Pack 3.

I've tried removing the Sims 2 folder; when I load a neighborhood it rebuilds the folder, then crashes when it tries to actually load the neighborhood.

I am using a 4k TV as a monitor, yes. Unfortunately, I don't have anything that doesn't take HDMI, but the last time I played it (and it worked) I was using an older 1080p TV as a monitor connected with HDMI. I tried connecting it to an old 1080p monitor I still have but it didn't make any difference. Even made sure to remove and rebuild the Sims 2 folder in Documents.

One odd thing is that, no matter what, the config logs say the screen mode is set to the screen's default resolution, even if I changed the default resolution with the Graphics Rule Maker. Could that have anything to do with it?

Also, I do have an Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card, and read in another thread somewhere that 10X0 graphics cards don't work with the Sims 2 on Windows 10, possibly since a Windows update in fall of 2018. Is there anything to that, and if so is there a fix or workaround?

@NightStryke12 , I think the latest Windows update did do something to mess up the game and I'm not sure what exactly. I did a Google search and it came up with several solutions.

    Please keep us updated.

    Sul sul, @NightStryke12.

I'm sorry to hear you're having a rough time getting into the neighborhood. One thing that I've found works fairly well for crashing during that transition is to try running the game in Windowed mode. Could you give that small tweak a try to see if it helps you get in?

Unfortunately, nothing there had any effect. Sadly, it's really looking like there is no solution to this problem. ☹️
