When you open the game, it will say "Sims 2 Pet Edition" or something like that, and then it won't do anything for a while. It's not frozen. Leave it like that for 10 or so minutes, and it will eventually load into the game. After that, when you try to open it again, it will load in 20 or so seconds. When you play the game, a lot of things that you do for the first time will be like that, but only for the first time. The only issue I'm having with the game right now, is it crashes when I try Creating a Sim, or when I try to play a sim already made.
My sims 2 also crashes but at random points. I could be playing it for 2mins to 20mins but eventually it crashes nd ive tried running it on different service packs but still the same. My only guess is that it dont work on windows 8.1 properly but seeing as the majority have windows 8, you think this would never of been a problem. Why bring out a game for free that you clearly didnt bother checking if it worked on all windows haha EA have pissed people off. Not made them happy haha

This seemed to fix my game played it now for about 4 hours without a crash, i think it was basically the game not recognising my graphics card.
