can't get past "solve the ranger's puzzle" in "Vacationers guide to the outdoors

I am at "solve the ranger's puzzle" in "vacationer's guide to the outdoors and it won't pass this task. Each time The sims complete their searching the same three exclamation point bubbles appear. I ...

And they will continue to stay that way until you give the answer. Quit searching and go to the ranger and tell him the answer.

I'm stuck in a loop. As soon as they finish searching for clues it pops right back to needing to search for them again.
