If they weren't already planning to cheat you in the Marketplace, they would just use real-world currency instead of an invented one you need to buy with currency. The purpose of in-game currency is to make purchases more expensive and more confusing. Here are some examples. 1) They can manipulate the price of the in-game currency. 2) They can refuse to sell "moola" in the exact amount you need to pay for Marketplace items. 3) They can introduce other forms of in-game currency that you can only buy with "moola." Let's call the second in-game currency "glimmer." They can designate some dlc to be purchased only with "glimmer" and then manipulate the price of "glimmer." 4) The next step is creating a third kind of in-game currency--let's call that "crystal"--that can only be purchased with "glimmer" and allows you random drawings of items. 5) That's how you turn The Sims into a Gacha game for gambling addicts.
