Your sim can no longer be in an event when you're giving them traits now. In the first screen shot it looks like your sim was in a culinary career event.
Yeah, no, I did try it outside of the event too + with my other sim at the time (who wasn't in an event). I tried everything, so I have no idea what fixed it other than just not playing for a long time and then trying again. Still a good tip though, might work for others struggling 🙂
