One of my roommates disappeared with the Jungle Rush update. She was a child of a previous household that grew up and moved to Catarina's Condo with some of the other adult children into a household I named "College Crew". Once the Jungle Rush update was released, she disappeared, and "College Crew" was renamed to one of the roommates' last names. A short time later, another adult child living in a different household disappeared. "Brenna" later showed up as a Townie, but I never retired her, nor was she divorced - in fact she was in the midst of a very juicy love triangle! I checked my "retired" Sims to see if I inadvertantly retired her, but nope. I ended up losing 2 Sims, which is really frustrating. Has anyone had this happen and get their characters back?

You can try to see if the disappeared sim is still around the town and if they haves turned into elder, marry them back to the house hold.
If you read a bit back, you can see that during Sweet Treat Showdown it’s advisable to avoid taking passive/NPC family members to Parkside and Cafe. And be extra careful when Surprising Choice picks one of passive/NPC family members and ‘takes’ them to town locations.
Also if you have a sim doing the Business Career, avoid using the 2 energy actions of the desk. The action has slightly different titles but it calls another sim from the town population and unfortunately it can also be passive/NPC family member. The sim doesn’t necessarily turn up immediately but the game might load the sim to Downtown later when there’s room for more sims.

Thank you, I hadn't seen any of those notices. What should I do if I can't find my person around town? Am I just out of luck?
Returning player here. I aged my sim's son, started a friendship story, and today I noticed that the son was removed from the family portrait and from my sim's contacts. The friendship story was removed as well. I remember yesterday they did have a hangout at the Cafe/Parkside.
I actually found him standing in front of the house. My sim had the option to introduce herself (even with a flirty introduction, ew); he's now in her contacts as an "acquaintance", no longer as "son", and I have the option to start a new friendship story. I'll probably just do that, seeing how this bug has been around for so long, with no chance of being fixed and restoring the family relationship.
There is glitch at Parkside during sts events
If you do a event with passive sim at Parkside during sts then that sim will be removed from home and portrait
