How often does the bug occur? Rarely (0% - 9%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? All 4 sims were in relationships with other players' sims. All were in a relationship event as the new bbq event started. After I clicked on them to complete their events, I noticed that those relationships had disappeared and so had the contacts for those sims. 3 out of 4 sims lost all contacts from other players' sims, so it wasn't limited to those 4 sims.
What do you expect to see? Relationships and contacts not disappearing.

Hi, I’m losing contacts again, and this time I’ve even lost the record that I was at the two parties where I made those contacts, so I won’t be getting rewards for what I accomplished there. One contact from the two parties remains, as it turns out it was the host of one of them and a friend, so I have proof I attended. During this time I also lost a lot of content, including many items costing plenty of llama zoom tokens.😭😭😭 I will contact EA directly about the missing content but if there’s anything that can be done about this contacts bug I’d appreciate it!
any update? 2021 now and the same thing happened to me, wondering where to go from here for disappearing NPCs
I've just had the same problem and am devastated. I only started playing a week ago and don't know what to do. ☹️

Additional feedback: Some things I've observed:
On Character 1, her contacts would go past 32 within a game session and I could "introduce"/"add to contacts", but sometime after restarting the game they will drop back down to 32 and some of those new contacts disappeared. I can't figure out a pattern to which get culled and which remain. ETA: I retired this character afternoon and created a new one in this slot instead of promoting a household member. Her pre-existing contacts were then "roommates" and I've been able to add 13 player Sims as contacts which are categorized as "Favorites". No disappearances as of yet... The number of contacts fluctuates throughout play session. Seems like whenever a townie wanders past my home, the number goes up?
On Character 2, she's at 25 contacts, and she also can't keep the new ones I attempt to acquire.
On Character 3, I was able to add one new story and have progress it to level 8. Her contact numbers seem to go to 20. All other attempts to add new contacts and start new stories have resulted in them disappearing before they got to level 2 or 3. I've lost count of how many, but at least 6 of them. One of them as I wrote this reply-- I started a first date, exited the game, and sometime in the new session I noticed that the person she was having the first date with had disappeared from contacts. The first date completed without an option to select a story. Just... gone.
On Character 4, this slot was also losing new contacts, so I turned this slot into a test subject-- retired the old one and promoted a household member to this slot. This new one was at 36 contacts about 20 of them current/past household/family, then I exited and reopened, and it turned into 35. One of her stories had made it to level 3 or 4 and is now gone and the contact is also gone.
Many of the contacts are past generations of family/household. I want that good upbringing trait and to create a legacy! ☹️ But it's not looking good for me. Too much of a good thing? I've checked in on friends' houses and found their Sims mine lost as contacts are still actively in the game and not retired. I asked one of them who said her Sim still had one of mine as acquaintance after mine lost them as contact.
An update to my previous report: I've retired all the prior Sims I have, and started up a new family branch. That seems to be helping-- still have some of the current Sims' contacts lost here and there but they're ones I hadn't started relationship stories with. So far, this batch of Sims hasn't lost a story. It makes me wonder if there's something about the prior Sims having such extensive families that affected it, or perhaps there's a maximum number of contacts across the account that we don't know about?
I've found with one of my current Sims that within one play session, I can get his contacts up to ridiculous numbers (70+!) by introducing himself to a bunch of townies, but the number drops after that session and eventually he forgets he knows them when I interact with them again. I've attached a screenshot example.
The "All" contacts seems to reflect any interaction or possibly even being in the same area with any NPCs and any player Sims? That number for all my Sims will go up and down. The "Favorites" seems to be any player Sims only-- none of my retirees, family members not in play, or NPC townies. The Friendly/Romantic/Rival doesn't correctly show numbers at all. For instance, one of my Sims has multiple romance stories with multiple fiancés, yet 0 Romantic contacts.
tl;dr: Contacts are buggy in multiple ways.
@ImmichanYou're able to keep 99 familiar contacts, but only 12-17 contacts of friends. (A few months ago I produced soooo many childen to get a rare haircut ... p.s. I hadn't received it.)
This problem exists since months.
It would be awesome to decide which contacts I want to keep and which one not. I have too many seniors from my friends and can't kick them out. If I try to get a new relationship/contact, one of the newest deletes himself and not the oldest one.
Can we have a fixed number of contacts and maybe the options to choose which one should kicked out? Like the friendlist? That whould be sooo nice!
(And sorry if my grammar looks like primary school - typing with the phone isn't really comfortable 😞)
I still have this problem like forever.
This time is really bad because I lost 4 contacts and I re-added them then I lost them again just overnight.
This problem exists like since the game launched but I think it's ignore. Many people have experienced this.
I report this issue many times also.

This is INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING!! It's happened several times now. I start a relationship with someones sim and get halfway through 5/10 or more and then the friend will disappear! I feel CHEATED AND WASTED MY TIME advancing in the game. I go to my friends list and click on view home and the sim that was deleted is there.This is rediculous!! I have to start all over again from the beginning and usually have to start over several times! And its not just one sim relationship at a time its almost all of them at once that just POOF disappear
This relationship disappearing bug has been happening to me for a month now and I refuse to SPEND ANY MONEY ON THIS GAME OR CONTINUE TO PLAY IT UNLESS THE BUG IS FIXED!.
The other thing I've noticed is that relationships with retired Sims are not being affected with retirement.
