Updating my experience, in case the team are reading - and to add to the list of things NOT to do, if you do get into your game!
I had access to my game from about 8pm GMT on Sunday until 6pm GMT on Monday (today).
Because of issues reported above and elsewhere, I’ve been very cautious with it: no parties, no visiting friends’ houses; no CAS; no swapping out active Sims; didn’t hard close the game. For the last 22 hours, I was able to do usual events and participate in the Treasure Hunt.
What I DID do, and what’s now locked me out again, was click, on the Treasure Map page, to go to the Sim in the Expedition event in Market Square (rather than clicking on his portrait in the UI). At that point, the game froze, I got the blue screen that we’ve all been seeing and I had to hard-reset the game. Now I’m back to ”Where’s the Network?”
I know it’s all been reported as a server issue but is there an additional, or related, issue here with the Treasure Hunt map being messed up (at least for me)? The events have not unlocked in order on the map - rather than progressing round the dotted line from the house, top left, to the final dig site, top right, my first dig site unlocked in the top right slot and the second in what’s usually the first.
Other info - I connect to Game Centre and EA only; no Facebook.
I’ll try and attach a screenshot, taken last night.

Got back in again, today. They didn't give any more time for the treasure hunt, but if you pay them, they will give you not nearly enough resources to make up for missing out on a single day's worth of playing the event. I should have thought to take a screenshot, but you'll all see it, if you can even get in, before the event ends. I hope I'll be able to continue, until then.
