@jbl3ck is correct. The view we see as a battle is a visualisation of the result. This can be understood by thinking of the instant simulation response. If we had to wait for it to play out then each simulation would take as long as 2 mins, instead it takes fractions of a second to display the end result.
Planning is the key - and maybe watching a run of the simulation to highlight this kind of delay.
