Scripts need to be updated. There has been ample warning that 17.4 breaks scripts. If they authors were still playing they would be updated, unfortunately people use old outdated scripts. Using your logic we'd all be on windows 3 because each update of windows needed better hardware. Or on the original MacOS (whatever it was called) for the same reason.
The software behind the game has been updated, the equivalent to moving from windows XP to windows 8. This makes everything more secure and provides more features to the developers and hopefully a more stable platform.
