'Game License is invalid' error locks me out of game

Titanfall 2 (owned on Steam), will not launch instead giving an error that says 'Game License is Invalid'. This error will persist and not allow me to launch the game at all.

I have attempted the following solutions:
- Clearing EA app cache

- Reinstalling game

- Reinstalling VC++ and DirectX

- I have also attempted using a different EA account on the same machine (I purchased the game on that account), same error appeared

also tried everything  but unfortunately this still does not work

  • Hi, thanks for the response

Titanfall 2 (and all other games I have) are installed to my D: drive. I only have a single SSD which I've partitioned into a C: drive and D: drive. The EA app and Steam are installed on C: while all of my games are installed on D:.

Both drives have full administrator permissions. However, I noticed that both the C: (where Windows, Steam and EA app are installed )and D: (where games are installed) drives , do not have full user permissions. The active permissions under drive properties->security-->user are limited to the following:

    >Read & Execute

    >List Folder contents

    >Read

Notably, the 'write' as well as 'modify' options are unchecked for the user section of permissions. Could this be a possible cause of my issues?

I believe that activating the write and modify permissions for the user on C: could have security implications, instead I could try installing the EA app onto my D: drive and activate all user permissions for the D: drive?

    HI @shadeslayer905

I've merged your posts together, To check which drive is TF2 installed on.

Also, for which ever drive it's on. Do you have full read/write access?

  • Hi thanks for your response,
-The game was originally purchased on Steam

-Both Steam and the EA app are in online mode

-I am signed into steam with the account that purchased TF2, and am signed into the EA app account that is linked to my Steam account

I also attempted your recommended steps

-My internet connection is not problematic as I am able to run numerous other online games without issues

-I have attempted closing all other applications and overlays that could introduce performance issues (my game)

-I have run the system file checker to update and repair drivers

-I attempted using Clean Boot mode, however I was unable to connect to the wifi in this mode, as such I was unable to launch the game in Clean Boot mode

    Hi @shadeslayer905

Thanks for letting us know what you are seeing, Would it be possible to get a few more details?

    - Was the game originally purchased on Steam, or accessed via EA Play?

    - Is both Steam and the EA App in online or offline mode?

    - Are you signed into Steam with the account that purchased TF2 (or the subscription) and signed into the EA app that is linked to that Steam account?

Also when you have a moment can we try a few more steps?

    Thanks!

  • -->First off when the game DOES launch properly, I can play indefinitely (until I shutdown the game) without crashes or problems. It is for this reason that I believe that my problem does not stem from driver problems.

The problem I am experiencing is two fold:

-->However, on launch, TF2 will (more often then not) crash during opening load screen. This by itself is not too unmanageable of a problem as I can simply shut the application and relaunch. I have noticed that if the crash happens once, it will happen multiple times in a row..... leading to the second, more difficult problem

-->Attached to this post is the Capture.PNG which is a screenshot of the error screen that appears on the EA app.

The error message is as follows:

'Game License is Invalid, The app couldn't read the game's license file, so we suggest re-launching the game in online mode. If the problem continues, try <ahref="https://help.ea.com/en/help/faq/clear-cache-to-fix-problems-with-your-games/">clearing your cache</a>.'

Once this error message has appeared, it will appear every time I attempt to launch the game for the next 12-24 hours (typically when I try again the next day the game will launch, with the possibility of the game crashing on startup - as mentioned earlier - being a coin flip). This error effectively locks me out of playing TF2 and being forced to wait multiple days before securing a successful launch and being able to play.

Neither of the recommendations included in the message have helped with the problem:

Clearing cache and/ore re-launching game in online mode (Clearing cache multiple times and I am always in 'online mode' i.e. my PC, steam and EA are all online for every launch attempt I have made)

I have attempted the following to resolve my issues:

    - Clearing EA app cache (as suggested by error message)

    - launching game through EA app rather than steam (this just launches the game on steam and then through EA)

    - disabling all overlays (steam, NVIDIA, EA)

    - adding exclusion to windows threat protection

    - reinstalling VC, reinstalling directx drivers, reinstalling game, reinstalling steam, reinstalling EA app

    - deactivating VPN

    - verifying game files (mentioned earlier game occasionally launches and then plays without problem, so this is likely not the problem-causing factor)

    Now some important ones:

    - Purchasing game on EA account and running it through EA and not through steam (same issues crop up)

    - Creating new EA account and purchasing game on second account (same issues crop up)

These two tell me that me owning the game and playing through steam is not the cause of these issues, as attempting to launch TF2 on a fresh EA account with no steam link still lead me to the same set of issues.

None of the above solutions have had any impact on my issues. This concludes my lengthy rant (thanks for reading) and I can say that I am more-or-less stumped. I love playing TF2 and would have 5 times the hours in the game if only I was able to play it. I have already tried the official EA customer support regarding my issues and all they asked me to do was refresh my drivers (which I had already done multiple times at that point).
