Try resetting your internet connection. That usually fixes problems with the game for me.

Force close your game.
Turn off your device.
Turn off your internet hardware (don't forget the wireless router).
Wait 15 to 20 seconds and start turning stuff on again starting with your modem (What. Ever.)

Have you tried playing on a different device? Sometimes that will fix things. There's an emulator for Android out the I've been able to play on (though it doesn't work great). Just do a Google search for "simpsons tapped out pc mac".

Have tried deleting the app and reinstalling? Had to do that a couple of times when all it wanted to do is to keep downloading....stuff, and the internet doesn't want to connect. Last time I did that, it really was the internet that didn't want to connect.

This happened to me the other night, couldn't log in for a long time, then traced it back to my modem had glitched, reset and it was fine.
