No, not a reference to any anime. Just a convenient name to give the Japanese character who teaches karate among other things.

Yeah, no. Long-running as the Simpsons is, Akira is older; the manga started appearing in 1982, and the film came out in 1988.
(I'm not into anime, either, but I have ready access to google :P )
(Also, my significant other is so obsessed with Akira that he has the kanji tattooed on his arm.)
