LOL :) I just dropped one in a neighbours town and it landed behind a building so I waited to see it pop out. And waited. And then waited a bit more. And then waited. You get my drift.... Eventual...

Hmmm.
I have had 3 beach balls and 1 soccer ball thus far. For me, the soccer ball did not add a ball to my counter. If I get a second soccer ball I'll be sure to make note of it here (I'll edit this post and post a new one) to let everyone know if one is added to my counter.
As for finding the balls - every single ball I have found has been at the bottom left of my town (assuming the mountains are the top). That seems to be the sweet spot for me.
I'm wondering, seeing as the soccer ball didn't add to the counter, if there is a certain amount of time we have to find the ball and that's what determines if it adds to our individual ball counts - just speculation. Again, if I get a second soccer ball I'll edit this and let all of you know how it behaves in my town.
EDIT: a neighbour dropped a soccer ball in my town (he contacted me to let me know - we are sort of trying to figure out how this works). When I saw it, it was a beach ball. I tried "long tapping" on it to see what happened and it did not work/did not add to my ball count - it just said the usual "ball collected" message. I'll keep an eye out for a soccer ball though to try to see what happens.
