Lots of great comments in this thread. Good idea, OP!
I started in September 2012. Found this forum and added a couple friends to make it through the Halloween 2012 event. Yeah, 300 donuts went a lot farther then, and I remember not believing I was spending real money on this game!
I joined the forum to ask how to build the bridges I was seeing in my neighborino's towns. I thought they were a special item you had to buy or level up to get. I didn know you just had to run road alongside water
I grew up on asteroids, missile command, moon walker, pacman, and have been a gamer my entire life. I remember Battle Chess too! Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizzards was my first PC game running HGA graphics on an amber monitor. I'm primarily an xbox console gamer now, I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2) pretty religiously since it was released in November 2009, so coming up on five years - great replay value there!
I think TSTO has the same longevity for me as L4D2. Since starting TSTO, I've purchased far fewer $60 console games than I would have. So even though I've spent an embarrassing amount of money on TSTO, it's still less than a couple years of monthly $60 console games. If my town went poof tomorrow, I would start over from scratch. I love the Simpsons, there's always something different going on in my town, great new content and events (excluding Easter 2014 and CoC), great forum communities (though we have had our ups and downs), and great neighborinos who have some fantastic towns.
All in all, I don't think I would abandon TSTO for another game and I don't plan on quitting in the foreseeable future.
