- LOL, I had a very similar experince!
When good ol' Gil arrived arround Xmas I decided to help him in his business with a Boatload purchase. With beeing rich donut-wise, I had a weak moment and went for some Buddhas... Some benches and fences here and there... I knew it was a bad deal... So I llimited myself to a total of 10 Homer Buddhas to purchase.
And guess what: with my 9th or 10th purchase I aquired Frink's Lab as well! 8)
Since Frink is worth 150 Donuts (and I would have purchased him later anyways) I went out of this 'experiment' cost neutral PLUS the stuff I got from the other Buddhas... :-)
I certainly cannot complain. BUT: I DO know that I went VERY lucky on this! So, it's nothing I would suggest to other tappers.
btw: here you can see what I got in total from the 10 Buddhas:

 - Very nice!
- That is killer! I could never bring myself to gamble on a Homer Buddha.
- I bought a couple buddas when I started. Got a bench, and a mystery box with a tree.

And THAT is a very wise decision!
I don't know why I even did this, and I can definitely not suggest to do it! I guess I was just a little bit excited of my new "richness" and just wanted to try it. A little bit like with a one-armed bandit or so... No real reason for it, just for fun...
HOWEVER: I made some calculation, based on the %-numbers presented on several sites and found out that the Homer Buddhas are not as bad as they appear - at least if you look at them on a purely donut-exchange perspective.
Do you know the term "expected value"? It basically expresses, what kind of value you can expect if you do a certain action like in an 'unlimited' amount.
Here it comes: the expected value for a Homer Buddha ist 16,17!
That means, you will get 16,17 donuts out of a Buddha (in terms of items) while just paying 15 donuts for it. So, in the long run, you get more donuts (mostly bond into items) out of it than you invest. My calculation is shown here:

I hope you understand what I did there. I made a seperate calculation for the Mystery box, since you get a Mystery box out of a Buddha in 9,983% as well.
So by the sheer numbers, the Homer Buddha is actually not THAT bad.
There is just one BIG downside to it!
You don't get the donuts, but mostly returning items instead (except for multiple premium buildings or characters. Then you'll get the donut cost worth of it. Same for the straight donus, of course. Otherwise you just get benches, trees, fence and such). You certainly don't need 10k fences or 2k benches and so on. So that is why you don't want to waste too much donuts into that. Plus: some items are not worth the donuts in your personal opinion and you wouldn't buy it straight.
But, as I said, from the sheer value of donuts, the Buddha is kind of a good deal.- edit mistake

Yes, you are correct, both in a mathematical and literal sense. You can actually expect a slight profit in actual cost of donuts of the items received versus what you purchased based on the actual Homer Buddha odds. But practically no one wants that many of a single premium item. I do avoid buying SVT, Moleman, and Frink's Lab, because of the potential to win them for free or less than their purchase price. I live to keep the weekly mystery boxes interesting and something to look forward to. I still do not have SVT!bradyc79 wrote:

I cannot disagree! Actually I am of the very same opinion!
I just wanted to present a different view on the Homer Buddha. Especially if you are new to the game, have never bought any of the Homer Buddha items and are interested in some of these, some limited purchases of the Buddha might be interesting and fun for you.
I certainly don't want to advertise the Buddha too much... ;)bradyc79 wrote:

I like this approach! There is definitely some reason in it and I understand your point of view and appreciate it!
I just have another one. The first premium thing I bought was SVT. For three reasons:
1. It was the cheapest one available, and I wanted to have a first "yeah I bought something" moment... :D
2. The premium earnings of it make a difference especially in the beginning of the game
3. Sooner or later you are supposed to get your donuts back (when you get SVT from the mystery box at a 2% chance), which ends in a donut-cost-neutral investment. But you got the premium earnings of SVT straight from the beginning!
Like I said I can understand your point of view here, to let yourself be in the hope to get SVT and stuff one day. Well, I will certainly be as nearly happy as you, once I get the 30 Donuts for him, instead for the character itself. ;)- Now I wish I had bought the Xmas skin for Frink's when I had the chance. For only 10 donuts, not bad. I was looking at it in a neighbor's town just now, Annette, and I like it enough, that I would leave it on for a few months at least. More lights with all the other scientific looking stuff looks good!

you do know that if you buy those items and then you get them in the buddha or mystery box you get the donut equivalent back.
for example if you buy SVT and then you get him in the mystery box you will get 30 donuts.
so basically you will get your money back.
If you have the 30 donuts to spend i say go ahead and get him because you are missing out on months of enjoyment of the character in your springfield.
