Here are my results since I started tracking. I know it's a bit messy, but I'm just keeping a simple text file.
date, task lengths, vs actual task lengths
22, 4,2,6,2
23, 1,2,4,1, v 4,2,6,1
24, 2,2,2,2, v 1,2,2,2
25, 4,2,6,4, v 2,2,6,4
26, 4,1,2,1, v 4,2,2,1
27, 2,1,4,4, v 4,1,2,4
28, 4,4,2,2, v 2,1,4,2
I thought it would be two from the previous day to start and then it transitions into the last two of the current day tasks. Of course the 27th was different and so was today.
It is just going to be a long grind to get everything.
On the 27th and 28th you had three from the previous day (instead of two) and then the last one (instead of two) from the current day, so it still seems similar to the pattern I described, assuming the period between your timezone's midnight and the game's midnight is long enough to have started all three.- wadebearRetired HeroWell, today's task sorta went according to your idea.
I started playing just after 3 AM CDT - which is midnight PST. But I still got the first task length from yesterday. Maybe it's after 1 AM PST...
I check again tomorrow. I get up a little later every day so maybe I'll get tomorrows task lengths tomorrow. - wadebearRetired HeroArrrrggg!
I woke up at 2 AM with my eyes floating and throat on fire, so while I was dissolving a throat lozenge I decided I might as well catch up on my game... Forgetting that yesterday's first task was 6 hours long...
Now my Cecil tasks for today add up to 20 hours! That's gonna keep me up until 11 PM... - Mine is 20 hours today because the first task was 6 instead of 2. Even if I didn't finish, the prizes seem so small to even bother with. It wouldn't earn 1/10 of what you need just to get a stupid wall.

Yup, I'm in the same boat. I figure I'll be done about 11:20 PM tonight. I had my alarm set, but slept right through it. What a grind.- My tasks have never really matched with the list.
Cecil is trying to kill me. First task was 6 hours, next 4, 4 and last 6. Just started the last task and it will be done by 11 pm est.
I always start Cecil's tasks at 12 am so I have plenty of time to get them done. Did a sadist come up with this event??? Psdance wrote:

Ditto. I have the same 6446 pattern today. Luckily, I started the first task just after midnight so I'm on schedule to finish by a little after 9:00 EST.
I might just wait to start in the morning. Then maybe I won't start with a 6 hr.- wadebearRetired HeroI'll finish a little after 11 PM CST also.
I wonder if this is EAs punishment for those of us who try to get a jump on the next day's task? - wadebearRetired HeroOk, time to drag this one back to the front...
After days of writing down my Cecil task times comparing them to the list (http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/0/10328430.page) I finally had a day where my times matched the listed times and couldn't be any of the suggested variations.
Yesterday I started after 8 AM CDT and my times were 2-4-1-4, just like the list says.
Prior to that the latest I've started has been 4:30 AM.
So: The daily task lists switch over for me sometime between 5 and 8 AM - I don't know exactly when yet, but I'm guessing 5 AM. Why? because 5 AM CDT is midnight GMT/UTC. That would mean that the sever that doles out the task times thinks I'm on GMT/UTC time for some reason.
I've looked at the settings in both my devices and they're both set on CDT with the correct time.
I often have problems with websites that try to determine your location based on your IP because of the way Hughesnet satellite Internet is set up (Hughesnet has several down-link sites in various locations). I have had Firefox insist that I'm in Mexico and gotten all my search results in Spanish. Currently the time converter site (see link in my signature) thinks I'm in Kansas. But I don't see how that could be affecting me since as far as I know there are no Hughesnet down-link sites in Europe.
Any suggestions on what may be making this happen? - I am in the eastern time zone 4am eastern is the time dividing previous day and the current day (assigned tasks prior to 4am eastern will follow the prior day's length, tasks assigned after 4am eastern will follow the current day
This isn't about any setting in your personal device wadebear -- you can't fix this--it's a coding thing on EAs part (referring to local time for the midnight determination so the Cecil tasks reset at midnight eastern correctly) but then coding the calender (for which tasks you see on which day) based on EA server time (4am eastern is when the game resets end of phases).
The in game update this morning didn't fix this (assigned at 3am got yesterday's 2 hour job)...I just write down the calender a week or two in advance and then look at each day and decide if it would be better if I used the first task of the prior day or not (it depends on when I want to start the day)
ETA: if you decide to wait until 4am eastern to start the tasks you can't log in between midnight local and 4am eastern, even just entering your town will fix the Cecil task #1 as being from the prior day
