I think the best approach for Holiday items is to bring back the old stuff as premium items that can be purchased for donuts, while introducing some new items that can be obtained through quests or events (like Whacking Day). This way there's something worthwhile for everyone and a good way for EA to make some money while pleasing both the old and new players. Quite simple, really.
