I broke down and bought the portal an license last night. The portal looks awesome. I had always regretted not buying the ghost zapper last yr. Not for function, but for the cool limited time item.

The license goes away after the event. The other consideration is that you can craft the prizes later if you have the items needed.
You can calculate the amount of extra currency the license will give at each 12 day stage (1080) and then compute the percentage that is of the final price total. For stage 1, 11%. For stage 2, 15%. For stage 3, 7%. (Thanks to Cguy who commented on this on Addicts.)
So far I'm on track for stage 1, so not getting the license.
