I think it only works so the simpsons have a huge library of character and places/buildings they can add. I don't think family guy have the same feel unless they open it up to there other spin off sho...

Simpsons do have a lot of material to use, but how much is actually available in the game? Maybe 5% (being very generous, with buildings, locations, characters, etc.). I think quite a few other shows could do a similar game, and hope they do.
