If you look at it from the perspective of "either way you are paying 100k" it doesn't seem to make sense.
But, if you start with 2 donuts, then you will pay either 50 or 100k for the last donut.
If you start with 1 donut, you will pay either 50 or 100k for two donuts.
It doesn't really make a difference for how much you spend, or what you receive, but you are getting twice as much for your money. So there is an illusion of value.
