Your snakes will be released in random towns and you will have to whack them all again or lose your hard earned whacks. The number ranges. I had one town where I had to whack 30+ snakes. This is also my experience. But want to add 1 thing...
don't just pay attention when entering / leaving. Pay attention the whole time. I had my snake count drop WHILE I was in the town. Whacked snake number 4 and after collecting, instead of incrementing up by 1, my count went down by 7.
There were 8 (7 it went down +1 that I didn't get credit for) more snakes in that town for me to whack though (for a total of 13 whacked in that town, during 1 visit)
