Compatibility & Self-Discovery Explained

Hi!

This thread is a 2.0 version of these threads put together:

Due to spoiler tag issues in this forums and how the post hierarchy system works here (and how posts can be collapsed), I've decided to make a new thread which could also look in other things.

Turn-ons and turn-offs for example, even though the description of each one gives you the exact into which attracts sims.

This thread contains info on the following topics:

Use links to jump to desired info. Please do not comment under the linked post.

    Self-Discovery system

What is Self-Discovery system? It's a system which add new personality traits to young adult and older sims. Young adult and older sims can have a maximum of 6 personality traits. If self-discovery moments come to younger sims or pets, decline them.

Most of the self-discovery moments come from Growing Together. A few special cases won't require the pack.

Each trait is put in one of the categories which the game tracks. Some categories categories have maximum and minimum values while others only have a maximum value. Once a certain threshold is met, the game will either:

    • Suggest your sim a random trait from the category.
    • If one of sim's traits is in the category but in the opposite value, a trait replacement is suggested.
    • If sim already has a trait from the category and in the same value, nothing happens.

Sims can have up to three self-discovery moments in their life. Declining a trait suggestion won't count towards the limit. Using a Re-Traiting potion will remove the extra traits (unclear if it resets the counter though).

Here is each category. Under each category I'll show what traits are associated with it and include additional posts on the message and interaction that help towards it. If it's a category with minimum and maximum values, I will use + and - symbols to indicate it (+ can replace - and vice versa).

        Potential Interactions

        Special Triggers

Chased by Death suggestion can come up when your sim either asks Grim to check his Sablet of Souls or respond “I’m scared!” to the phone call telling your sim that in the caller's dream, Grim was checking his Sablet and looking at your sim.
The chance of it being suggested afterwards is 80%. Clumsy, Macabre, and Adventurous sims have higher chance of being suggested it. This suggestion will not be blocked off by other Ambition traits and having reached the max self-discovery moments.

Note. Chased by Death won't block out other Ambition trait self-discovery moments. In fact, it speeds up the tracker, making these sims more likely to have a self-discovery moments for Ambitious, Over-Achiever, and Self-Assured.

        Related Interactions
        • Mirror interactions (Admiring self, Psyching self up, Practicing Speech or Debate etc)
        • Vain Street celebrity quirk interactions
        • Negotiating a promotion
        • Asking for a higher grade from a professor.
        • Progressing in The Brainiacs student organization.
        • Placing in top 3 in the Finchwick Fair.
        • Winning against other sims (in chess, cards, video games, magic duels etc).
        • Having reached max career level
        • Graduating the University

        Potential Interactions

If your sim has recently interacted with a cat, they can't get a self-discovery moment for Dog Lover and vice versa. Animal Lover trait can also be suggested in both of these case.

        • Interacting with pets
        • Teaching dogs tricks (More effective if the dog is not in the household)
        • Befriending rabbits or birds

    Sim Characteristics & Social Compatibility

If you have Growing Together, then you have a new likes and dislikes category: Sim Characteristics.

When you put on a Sim Characteristic preference, it will take effect on other sims as soon as you meet them (if they have the right traits). Each Characteristic has traits that add points (+) and traits that remove points (-). If the Characteristic is dislike, the points will be reversed. So 3 points would become -3 points.

Here are the characteristics and what traits they include:

The final compatibility score is a sum or both sim's compatibility score. And if it's not neutral, a puzzle piece icon will indicate their compatibility. Here are the compatibility tiers and their point ranges:

    • Amazing: 6 and up
    • Good: 2 to 6
    • Neutral: -2 to 2
    • Bad: -2 to -6
    • Awful: -6 and lower

So, for example, if Sim A has 3 points towards Sim B and Sim B has 4 points towards Sim A, it totals up to 7 points, making the game show Amazing Compatibility for both of the sims.

      Ambitionless Sims

Ambitionless Sims tend to lack the motivation to improve personally or professionally. They might avoid putting in hard work in their career, or maybe they prefer to laze about their messy homes.

Liking Ambitionless Sims means other Sims with traits like Lazy or Slob will gain some compatibility with your Sim. However, traits like Ambitious will lower their compatibility with your Sim.

      Traits:

      • Slob +3
      • Lazy +3
      • Professional Slacker +3
      • Generous (For Rent) +1
      • Ambitious -3

      Argumentative Sims

Argumentative Sims tend to quarrel often with other Sims. Perhaps it's because they feel a bit insecure, or they like the thrill of winning a debate. Or maybe they just enjoy being mean!

Liking Argumentative Sims means other Sims with traits like Hot-HeadedMean, or Evil will gain some compatibility with your Sim. However, traits like Good will lower their compatibility with your Sim.

      Traits:

      • Evil +3
      • Hot-Headed +3
      • Mean +3
      • Self Assured -1
      • Proper (Snowy Escape) -1

      Cerebral Sims

Cerebral Sims tend to favor logical, scientific, or technological pursuits. Perhaps they enjoy a competitive game of chess, diving into a new book, or achieving virtual greatness in video games!

Liking Cerebral Sims means other Sims with traits like GeniusGeek, or Bookworm will gain some compatibility with your Sim. However, traits like Creative or Goofball will lower their compatibility with your Sim.

      Traits:

      • Genius +3
      • Geek +3

    Grief Trait Replacements

With Life & Death, the grief system is introduced. Depending on whether your sim copes with it well or badly, a trait swap can be suggested. These will not count towards the Self-Discovery limit, nor will they stop happening once 3 Self-Discovery moments are had. More on Self-Discovery here.

When sim copes with grief positively, a negative trait could be swapped to a positive one, and when your sim copes with grief negatively, a positive trait could be swapped to a negative one. Remember that the replacement trait suggested may not conflict with the trait being replaced and the replacement can always be declined.

In essence, when a grief ends, if a lot of positive (+50) or negative (-75) coping was done, a trait swap can be suggested. If sim stays between the hidden value of -75 to 50, no trait swap happens once the grief ends.

    Here are lists of:

One trait can have multiple trait-swap options. For example, Loves Outdoors can either change to Lazy or Gloomy.

Update! For the Self-Discovery guide, all categories got their Potential Interactions tab updated so you can see some interactions your sim has to do to earn the self-discovery moment.

I achieved all this using the data science techniques learned and programmed a software that searches through all the tuning files (99% at least) for the modifiers, so updating the lists will be easy.

    However, one question arises!

Has anyone had a self-discovery moment for the following traits?

    • Green Fiend
    • Recycle Disciple
    • Loyal
    • Snob
    • Self-Absorbed
    • High Maintenance
    • Skeptical

I'm going to post the same question to the wider crowd on Discord too, but I'm wondering if anyone got one of these? Because no matter what I tried, my program didn't find any results. I hope that this doesn't mean I have to make a bug report.

Very well, Discord answered this question well: it is possible to get those Self-Discovery moments.

In fact, someone else on Reddit has also taken an interest in this and has put together a table with a guide to getting each trait. They even have referenced my old thread, taking some info from there like categorizations.

Anyway, they even showed the picture of each self-discovery moment they could. And... that includes Recycle Disciple (automatically making Green Fiend valid), Loyal, and Snob category traits (except Skeptical, but that'll be valid too in that case).

It has a nice list of triggers, some tested out by the community. I myself have to do some testing myself.

So yeah, this question is solved!
