Almost as bad as when people say hashtag. Almost. If someone does that, I think its perfectly justifiable to jam a pen through their eye and into their brain. No jury would convict, you are doing the world a huge favour.i_set_fire wrote:

I am proud to say that # is, and always will be, the pound sign to me. But as to the OP's intent I kind of like skins for buildings. It gives a chance to give some different character to your SF.
My church will always be my own, private highway to hell.dgwglenn wrote:

I have never heard # being called pound sign before. Is that for weight? Would use lb for that here. Would 24# equivalent to 24lb?
# for me would denote number, although I never use it as such, would always use No. to abreviate number. Also used to use it to denote hexadecimal in the early days of computing but havent seen it used as such for a while. The only other term I have heard for it is square sign, apparently it was used in telecommunications, but when I first heard it on a recorded phoneline I had no idea what they were refering to.- While thus is certainly more interesting than the original topic, I dunno if I want to trawl the interwebs for the history of #
So I guess you guys didnt have £ on your typewriters, so used # as a substitute. For me that doesnt really cut it as an explanation as to its origin as in that situation surely # was meant for a different reason but then appropriated as £.
Man I must be bored. - Oh well another quest goes unanswered. Guess its up to me to go and lurk in the nerdier parts of the internet (which will confuse anyone secretly reading my net logs ;))
I shall report back any interesting developments.
I would also like to appologise to the OP, but I am not sorry, so I wont :) beeblebrox900 wrote:

Apparently using common nomenclature is unacceptable, but at least being a spectacular * and making murder references is ok when you're friends with a mod.
Whichever mod deletes this please pm so I know who.
Edit: I know she is friends with neo, I want to know who actually deletes this but not her repeated murder threats since obviously the ToS are on a preferential base.
