Simple. Store what you don't like or need. Redecorate your town seasonally, i.e. update your town layout depending on the time of year and event.
For example, I've been playing since the game first came out. So I pretty much have all the items and buildings, not including all premiums. I learned over time not to have all my buildings out at once, it gets too crowded and overwhelming, so I store all winter and halloween stuff in my inventory until it's the season to take them out. Right now, I'm getting my town ready for spring break and with the new travel event it's perfect, in addition I set up my Krusty camp for the kids and pulled out all summer height buildings to make hotel and resort sections in my town. When I'm done and happy with it, I take a snap shot, then pack the buildings and decoration away by the time Summer/Autumn comes to make way for other buildings/events.
It seems like alot of work, but it isn't unless you really want to blow up your town every time. The method is you're just putting away stuff and replacing with new or other stuff.
I have everything that didn't cost donuts, plus a number of premiums, and I have the vast majority of it on display. I don't redecorate seasonally, unless you count turning Christmas decos on and off, and I still have plenty of land left to buy. I'm not one of those tappers who crams all the items together either, my town is planned and decorated. I have to say I am bewildered by posts complaining about lack of land, unless you are a completionist. If there are completionists who don't have a problem with land, feel free to weigh in.
