If I remember correctly, it wasn't just that he wouldn't fit. The two of them together on it were too heavy, so it would have sunk lower into the freezing water.

I don't think it was room that was an issue. I think Buoyancy was. If I remember correctly, he tried to get on it, and it sank so the weight of the 2 people in sopping wet clothes would have been too much for the door. They would both have been immersed both in the frigid water and died from exposure. Many people in that time were unaware of how fast they could die in water that cold.

Here in FL we call it Liquid Sunshine. and Yes, yes it is.
