Not such a problem at all. My Springfield has been overhauled several times as it has expanded, but fairly early on, I did some urban planning, so that from top to bottom there are "columns" Squidport, Waterfront, Residential, Civic and museums and industry. Then the bottom is mostly woods and swampy with cemeteries, casino and odd ball things.
Any way I just run up each column from bottom to top to tap or search - it works well.
