In previous events structured (very roughly) along similar lines, there were tangible benefits that could be delivered to a neighbor you visited. On the flip side, you could similarly benefit if a neighbor visited you. Unless Im missing the obvious, those things dont seem to apply to this event.

I'm not absolutely 100 % but don't think that the owner of the Springfield that the social battle takes place in gets any benefit from the fight win or loose.

I have regular visiting neighbours and I don't have any prize or notification of any battle / visiting too!

I've been trying to figure out how the 24 hour timer gets so far off. I'm guessing it kicks in when you complete the third battle in friends towns, instead of when you start. Can anyone confirm?
