Springfield's Orientation (North, South, East, West)

Voted A. The only mountains I ever lived close by were the Alps and they were in the north.
  • I voted B for two reasons, it always seemed the orientation was that way to me and looking at barryriddl474's photo it suggests that too.
  • Seing as Springfield has no clearly defined layout, I'm leaving that totally open. :D
  • Wow, I had never really thought about this before and have always considered 'North' to be at the top corner of the map, making the mountains to the Northwest and Ocean to the Southwest. I am pretty shocked that only 10% of players agree with me! Perhaps I will need to add a shrub compass to my town. :-)

Welcome to the forums! Here at the official EA boards, we specialize in the nonsensical! :D

I'm a little slow on the uptake, but Thanks! This is a fascinating discussion. A lot does hinge on where on this planet one is located. I'm in the northeastern US, Florida is the sunny south, California is the west, with the Rocky Mountains off that way too. So from my perspective, B makes a lot of sense. But, what everyone else says makes sense too - So, we are ALL right...or we are all right.

I bet that's because people don't typically view the corner of a map as a compass point. (Of course, there are such maps, but usually the cardinal directions point to top, bottom, and sides.) I assume, Teo, you voted C since you view the top of your device's screen as North; I'm a little surprised as well that more people haven't done so. Just another thought: I wonder if the angle people typically hold their device orients them in one direction or another.

Imagine finding North on a donut-shaped map:

Hmmmm.... Some are using the word logic, but then describing feelings based on personal experience with their own location. YOUR mountains and YOUR large body of water are not THESE mountains and water. We don't all live in SF. So while it is perfectly acceptable to state your feelings, because i think that's the fun of this poll, please don't suggest they are logical.

    Spock would not approve.

(P.s. this comment is "tongue-in-cheek". Don't flip out on me. I feel like I have to specify this here lately)

I'm rarely serious  and I've been on the internet wayyyy too long to flip out over misunderstandings.

    I'm still right though :-P

I didn't suggest you were wrong. I also chose C.

And I also don't flip out over misunderstandings, like this one.

Without a predefined key or compass, there is no right answer. That's what is fun about this question. It's purely subjective.

So it is really interesting that so far, A and B have remained tied. That is a statistical anomaly.

I enjoy reading people's reasons for their selection. Most seem to be related to personal geographic locale, but others are not. Fun thread!
