Upgrade castles or Spend Elixir?
Go with the decorations unless you think you already have enough decorations then just spend the rest on pointless upgrades...it's all on you, if you want more stuff buy it now.

I've upgraded the characters for sure. There's not reason not to since the gold doesn't go away. I've upgraded Homer to something like level 50 or more...
