If everyone gets what they want without anyone paying anything, the game can't continue.
I disagree with this statement and the logic behind it for two reasons.
1. "Everyone" isn't even close to getting everything they want. The vast majority either save or spend real money on donuts for select items because that is all they can reasonably afford to do.
2. It seems more logical that if people could get specific items they want at a discount they would be more inclined to spend real money to get them rather than blindly throwing donuts at a mystery box and crossing their fingers.
Most people with any sense will look at these boxes, see the odds of getting what they really want, and will pass on them altogether or, if they're feeling frisky, gamble on one or maybe two.
Mystery boxes generally only benefit two types of players - The players who can amass enough donuts to clear out boxes (or have so much stuff the boxes have very few items) and players who aren't very picky about what they get and genuinely don't mind gambling with their limited supply of donuts. That accounts for a definite minority of players.
For what it's worth, there have been what I consider to be two really good mystery boxes this year. Valentine's and 4th of July. The quality content of those boxes combined with the very reasonable prices took much of the gambling aspect away. So, if mystery boxes aren't going away, the least EA can do is compile better content for these boxes and cap the number of items in a box to improve the odds.
