It actually wouldn't be unfair! You're getting all the old items for free, which would have been for donuts in every other event- so actually you're doing relatively well, you'll have to buy less premium items overall as it'll only be 1 year necessary- rather than 2/3.
I mean I understand the frustration to a certain extent but what would you prefer, this years free, or the last two years free instead

Why not both?
Even if it was for donuts previous year. Those new prizes are now free and would be pretty unfair if they would cost donuts for all new players.
