OpenXR support for upcoming VR mode

Hello VR fans...

For those waiting for VR support to come to EASPORTS WRC, please can I encourage you upvote this suggestion to have OpenXR support rather than SteamVR (OpenVR) mode only. VR performance is often the number one complaint when being added to a 2D game after launch.

Typically there is a performance hit running VR games in SteamVR mode. This is made worse if you are running a none native SteamVR headset e.g. Meta Quest (the most popular headsets used for PCVR currently) the Reverb G2 (the most popular Simmers VR headset) and Pimax headset and so on. The performance hit is usually in the range of about 10%.and sometimes more.

Furthermore, games supporting OpenXR can make use of other performance enhancing tools such as the OpenXR toolkit to enable foveated rendering and other sharpening tools. From Unreal v4.27 onwards there even appears to be OpenXR plugin suppport, so from a game engine perspective this should be feasible. If iRacing can do this, so can can Codies 😁

Whilst working on VR mode, adding 'Quad Views' support for VR headsets that support eye tracking (Quest Pro, Pimax Crystal, Varjo Aero) would be the icing on the performance cake, but lets shoot for OpenXR support first.

Thanks Ham.

That article is from 2020. Good read, though!

True however F123 is OpenVR only. Somewhere on this forum there's quote from Dev's saying it would be OpenVR only. Interesting link though given it was back in 2020.

"Epic has made exciting progress on this front with Unreal. The recently released Unreal Engine 4.24 includes built-in OpenXR support, and it's just a checkbox away."

Lookig at the game .exe properties it looks like WRC in on v 4.27.2.0 so this should be just checkbox away 😁 Fingers crossed!

  • Would the UE checkbox give us Native OpenXR like iRacing or would it still require OpenComposite like ACC? Pretty sure OpenComposite adds another layer to the process which would steal valuable resources. As we all know ACC is quite challenging to get right in VR. Even on the best PC with 4090 under the hood.

  • One more thing: Please use quad views.. faster and better picture.

Not too crazy to implement either. basically:
    1) Render the entire image low res (say 8x, maybe 16x lower resolution)

    2) Render the part of the screen the player is looking at over top high res, maybe even super sampling and only do it for a small piece of the screen(eyes can only move so fast.. try to do roughly 40 degrees fov horizontal and vertical and you'll cover the foveated region plus a little extra in case eyes move.

    3) Draw the overlay (don't draw in previous renders)

Can lead to as much as 3x better performance if GPU is the bottleneck.

  • Love how your post opens with 'for those waiting for VR support'.    How about just, 'Disappointed customers of EA'?

How is it remotely acceptable that this game was brought to market without VR support at launch?   And you're all still playing the game instead of immediately demanding a refund after experiencing a downgrade from dirt 2.0?  That's really sad.

Codemasters definitely slipped a notch in my estimation to be associated with EA and this travesty of a racing simulator that runs like junk and, months after launch, has people asking for basic features that should've been perfected by launch.

Look, I know this is the new era in gaming where donkeys line up to suckle at the feet of big companies and anxiously await new DLC to purchase in the hopes that if they just fork over enough money collectively the developers will address all of the shortcomings or a mod community will emerge and provide what is lacking, but this game is so bad that I for one would rather stick with the current crop of racing sims than pay EA anything at all for consistently letting us all down.

If you take a look 👇
    https://www.ea.com/games/ea-sports-wrc/wrc/news/season4

"Built using OpenXR technology, VR in EA SPORTS™ WRC adds a new dimension and level of immersion to your rally experience; we will share more details and a final release date once the work is completed, tested and a release is scheduled."

Well done all.. I'd call that a win!

Looking forward to trying it 👀
