Actually, it's not necessary any action there for the game to freeze. Just going in and trying to go out, freezes the game.
And I'm going to describe "freeze" as "not responding", because music is on, and you can even see the drivers' eyes moving. So you're just stuck in that window.
I am experiencing a very similar issue in My Team Career mode. In my case the game does not freeze but it ignores my selection when assigning upgrades. Whenever I try to transfer an existing part from Driver A to Driver B the upgrade stays with Driver A. And when a new upgrade is developed if I choose Driver B the game still assigns it automatically to Driver A. So while your game gets stuck in the assignment window in my save the system just forces all upgrades to Driver A regardless of my choice. It seems both of our problems are related to the same underlying bug with the upgrade assignment system in My Team Career mode.
I’m having your problem now. I managed to move a part from driver B to A but not A to B. Assigned parts auto goes to A even if I selected B. So frustrating and a curse to my separated strand development paths for me and my AI teammate.
