I have fixed it now, alongside many other problems I was experiencing. I had to go into the hardware_settings_config.xml and set asynchronous compute to false. Sorry to say, but it's a shame this got hardcoded when it was a toggleable option in the settings in earlier games! It got really frustrating near the end, I'm glad I could fix it on my own. However, I don't think this is how this should normally work - to be quite frank because I love these games.
