Matchmaking in clubs always seems to just be based on skill rating which makes no sense. Should just be based on your current division, else what is the point in having seasons? My current club is...

Final comment having now gone through play offs.
Seems like Matchmaking in playoffs works correctly and you do only match teams in your division.
Unsurprisingly after playing most league games against Div 1 teams, despite being in Div 3, we went 10 Wins - 0 Loss. Bad experience for all those teams we beat easily.
Unfortunately the fan rewards for Div 3 playoffs are terrible.
Summary:
Team has a high skill rating from previous season.
Consistently match Div 1 teams based on skill rating who have 86 rated AI.
Cant progress beyond Div 3 due to playing at Div 1 level with a AI handicap of 82.
Go unbeaten in play offs against Div 3 teams.
