Season 4 Update - i7-2600 crashes at startup with Exception 0xC000001D

After updating to Season 4 (0.31.1), Skate no longer launches.

System:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-2600
  • GPU: GTX 1660 Ti
  • OS: Windows 10 22H2 (19045)
  • Game installed on SSD

Behavior:

  • EA Anti-Cheat loads successfully.
  • Game opens a fullscreen black window.
  • Crashes immediately back to EA launcher.

Troubleshooting performed:

  • Uninstalled/Reinstalled
  • Repaired/verified game files multiple times.
  • Rebooted PC.
  • Plenty of free SSD space available.

Event Viewer:

  • Faulting application: skate.exe
  • Faulting module: skate.exe
  • Exception code: 0xC000001D

Additional information:

  • Game worked prior to the June 2 / Season 4 update.
  • Crash dumps are generated and both crashes occur at the same address, suggesting a deterministic startup crash.

  • I have had the same inability to load the game.

After trying all the software fixes Google AI thought could help, it turns out my old but powerful Workstation Video Editing machine (Xeon - Sandy Bridge EP architecture), is not compatible with EA's AVX2 instruction set (in Season 4 - 3 was still using it).

Unless EA do a patch to support AVX and not just AVX2, I'll need to buy a newer computer, or PS5 to carry on playing skate. Which I'm not going to do! Probably for the better, I love this game and it's taking up way too much of my time!

Yeah, I got the same confirmation from both ChatGPT and Gemini. I was just using this build to push the hardware to its limits with Skate, as it still runs perfectly fine otherwise paired with a 1660 Ti. If this patch marks the end of the line for Sandy Bridge chips running this game, that’s totally fine—I'll just swap over to my other build. It just would have been nice if they explicitly mentioned dropping legacy CPU/AVX support in the patch notes.

    Hey there,

There was a note in the patch 0.31.2 that mentioned that:

    • Fixed an issue where PCs under the minimum required specs with less than four cores would crash on boot.
      • Developer’s Note: Now, if a player tries to boot up skate. with a PC that has less than four cores, they’ll see a UI message to inform them they lack the appropriate hardware and can’t play.

Is this still happening after the patch?

Anyway, please note that the i7-2600 is well below the minimum specs.
