I think it's just a balance thing. Coliseum bosses have ramping damage and, more relevant to your question, ramping damage reduction. Sounds like you're maxing the damage reduction at your current level. Only leveling your character up higher will overcome it.

The method of damage reduction is what's relegating you to 1 damage.

Not true I had the same thing happen but at 10% and I upgraded luke by 10 levels still only got 10% and then locked up untill boss defended me.
